Online poker has (deservedly or not) gotten a bad reputation, and it’s actually illegal in the U.S. It came as a bit of a surprise, then, when Yahoo launched a new site called Yahoo Poker. The site’s not for kiddies, and it’s not a joke; players will use real money.

Euros and British pounds are the only eligible forms of money, however, as Yahoo Poker is being offered through the company’s site for the UK and Ireland. Also, as PokerPages.com reported (and as we at WebProNews found out for ourselves), “Players resident in the USA are not currently accepted.”

Yahoo has brought more than a few friends into this endeavor, however; St Minver, which “offers fully managed ‘white label’ gaming services,” is a partner, Sam Mann’s photo is visible throughout the site, and Springboard has stepped forward to act as the sole payment provider.

That brings us to another issue - how does Yahoo plan to approach the potentially destructive nature of online poker? Addiction has caused some people to lose their homes and families, but the search engine corporation stated, “We are committed to taking every reasonable step to discourage problem gambling. Our systems are designed to reduce the opportunities for problem gambling to occur.”

In a hard-to-find “Responsible Gaming” section of the site, Yahoo explains, “We place monetary limits on the amounts that can be deposited in any one day/week/month,” and there are a number of other systems in place, as well. Yahoo even points out a connection to GamCare, “the charity committed to promoting responsible attitudes towards gambling and working for the provision of proper care for those harmed by gambling dependency.”

It seems unlikely that those precautions will satisfy every critic; Yahoo Poker may create more than a bit of controversy. It’ll be very interesting to see, though, just how much time, energy, and money Yahoo puts into this project - and if Google Blackjack launches next week.

Poker and Gambling changing life style in UK

Gambling is a term comes with sense of betting games, the existence of gambling is very ancient. It denotes as sign of bad addiction habits. UK is top on spending on gambling per household, particularly in online sector and online poker. Couples of high profile names are playing poker, since the launch of Sky Poker TV Channels. Online has expanded its legs with the mushrooming of online poker sites. Now poker gambling has become the source of earning for many people.

Currently there are four gambling channels running in UK and there are around 200 poker sites that can be played around the globe, making online gambling an entertainment and pastime for net users.

UK people love to gamble. The tendency to gamble in UK is highest (62%) just behind Australia and Sweden, amazingly somewhat less per population than the US where only 62% of the population gambles.

A figure of £1266 per capita, collectively £76 billion a year, and 7.7% of GDP has been quoted in some press releases, compared to that of £600 per capita in 2004.This was the report from UK Gambling Commission and it also covered that the UK also has one of the biggest gambling spend per capita of any other country in Europe.

There are 33 million people in UK who gambles and biggest question is that, what types of gambling they are spending most and what is the place of poker in the list.

Now lets see the measurement of Gambling .The top most is horse racing ,and then dog racing, also gambling like bingo, national lotteries, pools and scratch cards. There is also casino gambling and slot machine gambling, and then you have online gambling.

In UK lottery is most popular form of gambling with 65% of the population. Scratch cards are second most popular gambling with 22% for each week. Slot machine gambling with 14%, horse/dog racing 13%, and pools, 9%.

It is surprising that actually only 3% of the population gambles online (in online casinos or poker rooms). On the other hand it proves that there is a scope and growth in UK market. Researches also show that females gamble online more than males. The percentage is 70% female to 30% male.

Figures of amount spent on gambling

Approximate figures, provided by the Gambling Commission, are £3.80 per household is spent each week on the National Lottery and £4.00 per week spent on pools, scratch cards and other types of lotteries. £7.20 each week is used up on bingo, £5.00 used up for sports betting, and approximately £20 in land-based casinos. Approximately £10 per week is spent on online gambling and £5.00 on slot machines.

Through data we can read that online gambling is one of the major gambling expenditure in UK people. Actual figures of online Poker is not clear, but through Poker sites figures are around £7.00 per household.

What is clear is that people love playing poker and it is not only men who have taken up this pastime. High profile female figures have begun to enjoy poker and the BBC reported one woman helping to support her family by playing poker at home.

Seeing the situation UK government has decided to take serious efforts, to reduce the problems created by gambling, for this the UK Gambling Act coming into force in September 2007.The government are suggesting that the Act will help reduce people tendency to gamble and will also protect children’s future and problems addicted gamblers.

Turkey has been a democracy and a secular republic since World War One, as it was then led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. It has been so to this day and has hosted land based casinos and allowed gambling until only a few years ago, a practice that has attracted tourism and helped the Turkish economy grow. However, a report that came out this week tells of restrictions that are likely to be introduced concerning online casinos and the gambling industry on the Internet. The Turks are facing a decision many countries also face these days, and the direction they take with regard to online casinos will be closely watched by gamblers worldwide.

A Turkish newspaper reported that authorities in the country are saying online casinos are “denigrating Turkishness, the republic, the institutions and organs of the state.” An amendment to the censorship laws being introduced will censor online casinos and block sites that encourage, promote or offer online gambling, practically shutting down any option the Turks have of gambling online.

The censorship law applies to more than just online casinos, targeting various web sites that at times are criminal and at times within the definition of freedom of expression, at least in the opinion of some. The bill will mainly combat child abuse and indecent broadcasting, but include online casinos as well, as it is currently proposed. Penalties will be prison sentences of between half a year and three years.

The law is controversial and being debated in Turkey, as well as elsewhere around the world. Does the government need to protect gamblers who play at online casinos from themselves? Is online casinos gambling a form of entertainment and skills or something else that needs to be outlawed? To add to the controversy over the proposed bill is the recent memory of the trial against Nobel Prize winner, Orhan Pamuk, for expressing his opinions that the authorities wanted censored. Soon we will all learn of the direction the Turkish government will choose to take.

Israeli police have started to crack down on online casino operators, including those who run backgammon and poker websites. Some of the more well known online gambling companies are run by Israelis including PokerStars and 888.com.

While the majority of Israeli owned online gambling businesses are based out of places like Gibraltar and The Isle of Man (similar to US businessmen running internet gambling companies from Costa Rica and Antigua), many of these websites contract employees within Israel for marketing purposes.

According to various reports, it has been suggested that Major General Yohanan Danino, head of the Police Investigations and Intelligence Unit, had notified Interlogic, which operates the Play 65 internet site, that both the police and the attorney general consider the operation of a gambling site for backgammon games a criminal offence.

The official warned the company that it must cease to allow players on the site to gamble real money on the results of the game, even though the game of backgammon itself, or gambling with virtual money, is not prohibited.

February 2007 might be the month that many banking institutions bring in banking regulations to halt some online poker transactions according to some industry experts, but others wonder if it is going to matter in the long run. When the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act went into law in October of this year, many online poker rooms turned away from their US facing businesses, and those that remain are depending largely on Neteller, which has steadfastly remained resolute that they will not comply with the UIGEA. Recently poker rooms have been encouraging customers to use other means of making deposits, just in case.

As online casinos start growing all over the world and people growing more acquainted with gambling venues, there is a need for changes to take place on in the internet gambling industry. Online casino operators must shift their focus from specific markets, mainly the English speaking ones, and offer their services in more languages. Europe, Asia and the rest of the world are already visiting online casino sites. Now, when will they actually be able to read what they say?

Gambling wages were accepted in various currencies and every online casino can be played using at least the three major currencies – American dollars, Europe ’s euros and British pounds. As they wish to become even more relevant and more accommodating for all gamblers where an Internet connection is available, online casino sites should cross the language barrier as well.

This is being done. Motivated by business reasons and by the new reality that has arrived, namely the upcoming ban on online casino sites in the biggest English speaking market, the United States, online casinos are picking up new languages. Notice on your next visit to your online casino that a mouse click on any of the dozen or so flags that appear on the top of your screen will translate the text to the corresponding language.

Not only are the online casino sites being offered in multiple languages, but also do tutorials and poker schools. This is a sign of the entire online casino industry, not just a narrow scope of certain websites or the gaming sites themselves, is expanding across borders. Inside information, not only the game tables, and even beyond the customer service aspect of online casino sites, must face the new reality and be available in more languages.

Thus online casino sites, games, customer service and even gambling schools are becoming more international, and accordingly, speak more languages. This way the online casino industry is both more welcoming as well as a place for people who share a hobby – online gambling – to meet beyond language and geographic barriers.
